The Church of Sant'Agostino Maggiore in Norcia was among the many monuments that collapsed

during the earthquake of 2016, as illustrated in the final picture.

I had worked there with my team for several months in 1989, during which time I restored

many of the paintings in the Church, including the one presented here.

This niche features a depiction of Madonna and Child, Saint Anthony Abbot, Saint Claudio, and the Coronation of the Virgin.

The cartouche displays the date 1497, but the full name of the painter is difficult to identify, with only the name 'Giovanni Battista' discernible.

This artist may have been the brother of Giacomo Giovannofrio, who signed the frescoes on the opposite side of the wall in 1512.

Archival surveys have revealed the identity and status of the patron, Perus Hiovannes Verrutii,

a wealthy cattle trader who was a devout follower of Saint Anthony.

In the painting, he is depicted kneeling

at the feet of his patron saint,

the protector of farm

animals.
