In 1999 in Karyes, the capital of Mount Athos, a mountain and peninsula in northeastern

Greece and an important center of Eastern Orthodox monasticism.

It is governed as an autonomous polity within the Greek Republic.

Mount Athos is home to 20 monasteries under the direct

jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

I was invited as a consultant by the Ecclesiastical Council, for a report on the conditions of the frescoes

of the painter Panselinos - 13th century AD - one of the most celebrated

Greek iconographers of the Byzantine era.

    The frescoes are located in

    the Protaton Church

    - 10th century
